The Hedland Well Women’s Centre will be hosting the Australian premiere of Woman at the Matt Dann Theatre & Cinema on Saturday 28 November, via a special fundraising screening for the Hedland Women’s Refuge.

A film by Anastasia Mikova and Yann Arthus-Bertrand, Woman stemmed from 2,000 interviews conducted across 50 countries, uncovering what it means to be a woman in different parts of the world.

The film covers topics such as relationships, marriage, family violence, aspirations, desires, oppressions and more. Forced marriage, deprivation of education, denial of voting rights and violence are daily realities faced by millions of women across the world.

Anastasia Mikova is a Ukranian born film director and journalist who covers social and humanist topics, and Yann Arthus-Bertrand is a French film director and photographer perhaps best known for his 1999 photography project Earth From Above.

Mayor Peter Carter encouraged local residents to secure tickets online to the fundraising screening.

“I’m pleased the Hedland Well Women’s Centre has secured the Australian premiere of Woman, a film which takes a look at the lives of women around the world and the challenges they face.

“Hedland is home to a multicultural community, with many of our local nationalities and cultures represented and reflected on the big screen in Woman.

“The added bonus of attending this screening is that funds will be raised for the Hedland Well Women’s Refuge, a life changing local community organisation.

“As we approach the 16 Days in WA Campaign, this film provides us all with an opportunity to reflect on the pervasiveness of violence against woman around the world, and what we can do to help stop this global scourge.

“The Matt Dann Theatre and Cinema provides a diverse selection of cinema for local audiences to enjoy, delivering on the Town’s commitment to provide a year round arts and culture offering which excites.”
