Hedland Recreation Hubs will strive for community wellbeing

Published on Friday, 3 July 2020 at 10:44:51 AM

The Town of Port Hedland has launched the new Hedland Recreation Hubs website, serving as the key online information portal for the delivery of the Town’s recreation facility masterplans.

News and information on the South Hedland Integrated Sports Hub (SHISH), JD Hardie Youth & Community Hub (JDHYCH) and Port Hedland Sports & Community Hub (PHSCH) will be hosted on the website.

The design of the three masterplans will take place under a staged approach, with works at the JDHYCH already underway. This work includes a new roof, structural modifications, HVAC installation, demolition and the alteration of the internal layout.

Contracts have been awarded for the architectural design of stages one and two of the SHISH masterplan, and stages one, two and three of the landscape design for the facility.

The Town has also awarded the contract for PHSCH stage 1 design works and support during the construction of this stage.

The Hedland Recreation Hubs will strive for community wellbeing, recognising the role healthy and active lifestyles play in creating a liveable town.

Hon. Commissioner Fred Riebeling AM JP said the Town was committed to the delivery of the masterplans, with the strategic goal of transforming sports and leisure in Hedland.

“I’m pleased the Town has launched the Hedland Recreation Hubs website, which will give community members and stakeholders key updates regarding recreation masterplan delivery over the coming months and years.

“We’re embarking on this journey to spearhead the health and wellbeing of current and future residents, with the three precincts serving as central gathering places for sport, leisure and activity.

“The Hedland Recreation Hubs strive for community wellbeing, actioning the commitments made in the Town’s Strategic Community Plan 2018-28 to deliver well utilised and valued community facilities.

“Contracts have been awarded to a number of businesses for stage 1, and 2 works, laying the groundwork for high quality construction work to take place. I want to congratulate the businesses awarded with these tenders, contributing to the successful delivery of the Hedland Recreation Hubs.

“Refurbishment works on the JD Hardie Youth and Community Hub are set to be completed before the 2020/21 cyclone season, since the site is also used as a shelter.

“We plan to begin works on the South Hedland Integrated Sports Hub and McGregor Street Sports & Community Hub in 2021, intending to complete all works on the hubs by 2027.”
