Hedland hounds set for ‘paw-some’ plans at Marquee Park

Council has endorsed the Marquee Park Dog Exercise Concept Design to support the need for a centralised dog exercise area in South Hedland.

During the planning of the South Hedland Integrated Sports Hub (SHISH), it was identified that sporting and aquatic facilities could be expanded if the space originally designated for a dog park was relocated.

The concept design for Marquee Park has been based upon research into other successful parks in Western Australia and adapted to meet requirements of the local climate and community safety.

Key features include designated fenced dog areas including separate areas for different sized dogs, watering stations, additional seating, and space for dog training areas which will house equipment, jumps and obstacles.

Safety in the area will be supported with the installation of additional lighting, repositioning of CCTV to ensure adequate coverage, and the removal of items that are vandalised on a regular basis.

Mayor Peter Carter said the plans for Marquee Park supported the health and safety of the Town community, while providing recreation and sporting activities and services.

“The plans for repurposing Marquee Park will not only support dog owners in providing a fit-for-purpose space for dog exercise and training, but will also provide additional space for aquatics to be included in the SHISH development plans.

“The repurposing of Marquee Park will also support the community’s safety concerns - activation of the space will discourage antisocial behaviour and provide an area for the community to engage in sport, recreation and family activities.

“These plans will alleviate the current ongoing maintenance costs of the water park and reusable assets will be repurposed and distributed to other Town community facilities.

“The Town has committed to providing free entry to all patrons under the age of 12 visiting South Hedland Aquatic Centre and Gratwick Aquatic Centre between October and April until a new aquatic centre is built, to ensure equitable access to an aquatic facility in a safe and welcoming environment for all children in Hedland.”

A Request for Tender is planned to be released as a Design and Construction contract as part of the FY2022/23 Capital Works Program.
