Hedland hits New York Fashion Week runway

Published on Friday, 16 September 2022 at 12:44:46 PM

The Town of Port Hedland’s 2022 Business and Tourism Innovation grant has supported Hedland resident, Nat Dann, to debut at New York Fashion week.

Dann’s collection, Ihraa Swim, took to the stage alongside Bobbi Lockyer’s Hedland-based Gantharri label, representing Aboriginal art and culture on the world stage.

Ihraa Swim features Indigenous art on swimwear to give aspiring local artists exposure and a platform.

Mayor Peter Carter congratulated the Hedland residents on their international recognition and success.

“This is a fantastic achievement for Hedland designers to have their talents recognised on the world stage. The Town is proud to have supported both Nat and Bobbi with grants to help them grow their businesses,” Mayor Carter said.

Grant funding from the Town supported Dann with registration costs for the event, coordination of eight run-way looks, venue hair and make-up and photography.

Lockyer has previously received Town of Port Hedland grant funding, to support her locally-based photography and arts studio during COVID restrictions.

“Everyone in Hedland is thrilled to see this opportunity eventuate and see local entrepreneurs given such a valuable platform to represent Western Australia and share our unique culture,” Mayor Carter said.

“This grant funding demonstrates how this important support for businesses promotes tourism and commercial activities for Port Hedland.

“The Town delivers several funding categories for community groups and organisations to apply for – the current Business and Tourism Grant is open until 30 September 2022.

“In addition, the Town’s annual Community Collaboration Grant, which supports not-for-profit organisations with up to $10,000 in funding to design, implement and complete projects that respond to local issues in Hedland will be open from 1 October 2022.”

“I encourage local individuals, businesses and community groups to look at the grant funding available and submit an application. We want to help the Hedland community bring their great ideas and projects to fruition.”
