Local organisations and families came together in South Hedland this morning to participate in the annual march against family violence.
This was one of hundreds of events across the country marking White Ribbon Day, the national campaign to prevent men’s violence against women.
The local march was coordinated by the Hedland Family Violence Action Group, a local initiative aimed at driving the awareness and prevention of family violence in the community.
Mayor Camilo Blanco said the event was a sign of how important the prevention of family violence is to the people of Hedland.
“Currently, a woman in Australia is murdered by her current or former partner every week, which shows the sheer scale of the epidemic we face.
“Just in 2018 alone, Hedland Police have responded to 1210 incidents of family violence; 581 of which children were present.
“This is completely unacceptable, and I’m sure everyone can agree that we can’t rest until we eradicate this problem.
“A positive sign is the greater willingness people have to talk about the reality of the situation and seek out support services.
“Abuse which is often behind closed doors needs to be exposed, brought to light and perpetrators must face justice.
“I am committed to working with stakeholders across the community sector and all levels of Government to ensure the Town is involved in finding solutions, and helping where we can.”
