Community members, creatives and stakeholders are invited to have a say in the Heartland Public Art Strategy community survey, open now until Friday 26 June.
The survey answers will contribute to the development of the Town’s Public Art Strategy, a framework which will guide the creation of future public art works and programs in Hedland. The development of the Public Art Strategy is a key action listed in the Town’s Arts and Culture Strategy 2019-2022.
The final Strategy will guide Council and the community on how public art should be commissioned, procured and planned for the future to align with community sentiment. The survey will uncover sentiments such as the degree to which Aboriginal art should be procured, the value placed on public art by residents and potentially new areas of investment and discovery.
Hedland is home to traditional Kariyarra, Ngarla and Nyamal art, as well as a burgeoning community of start-up creatives embracing digital technology.
Hon. Commissioner Fred Riebeling AM JP encouraged all residents to complete the survey so their voices would be heard in the final Strategy.
“The Heartland Public Art Strategy will be informed by the priorities of residents; for example, would you like to see more or less investment in public art? Would you like to see more Aboriginal stories told through public art? This survey seeks to answer questions like this.
“The Strategy will serve as a blueprint for how works should be procured and which areas should be prioritised. It will enable Council to plan public art projects over the longer term, in line with the direction and sentiments of Hedland residents and delivering on the Arts and Culture Strategy 2019-2022.
“Public art is accessible to all and communicates a place’s identity. Further, commissioning local creatives to produce public art will support local job creation, contributing to our region’s economic development in the coming years.
“The survey will be complimented by online polls and focus group sessions with key local stakeholders, so we can garner a broad cross sections of views in the development of the Strategy.
“I look forward to perusing the insights which are uncovered in the consultation process, concluding on Friday 26 June.”
