Gratwick Aquatic Centre Maintenance Top Priority

Published on Thursday, 25 October 2018 at 9:41:59 AM

Council has approved urgent additional repairs of the Gratwick Aquatic Centre (GAC), following a catastrophic failure of the filtration system during pressure testing last month.

Following the failure, an independent analysis was conducted of GAC’s infrastructure, to determine the appropriate course of action and to ensure the facility’s long term viability.

The analysis recommended a like for like replacement with the two failed pressure filters being replaced with two new pressure filters. The new pressure filters have a life expectancy of approximately 20 years.

Mayor Camilo Blanco was pleased action was being taken to rectify the legacy issues and future proof the facility for the community.

“With this approval, the Town can now proceed with all outstanding works to ensure the facility, once reopened, complies fully with the WA Department of Health’s standards.

“Taking into consideration the timeframe around the manufacturing and installation of the filters, and further testing, the projected reopening of GAC is October 2019.

“I understand how frustrating this has been for community members - GAC is a valued community asset used by sporting groups and families in Hedland.

“I thank the community for their patience and encourage people to enjoy the programs on offer at the South Hedland Aquatic Centre.”
