The Town has been granted $227,000 as part of the State Government’s Coastal Adaptation and Protection Grant, contributing to meeting the outcomes of the Town’s Coastal Hazard Risk Management and Adaptation Plan (CHRMAP).

The funding is part the State Government’s $5.5 billion WA Recovery Plan, which is funding 46 coastal management and planning projects across the state.

The funding will be used specifically for seawall infrastructure along the West End district, incorporating the Marapikurrinya Park seawall and the Richardson Street Seawall.

Hon. Commissioner Fred Riebeling AM JP welcomed the funding announcement which will help the Town deliver its strategic commitments to protect the coastline.

“I’d like to thank the McGowan Government for prioritising public infrastructure investment through the $5.5 billion WA Recovery Plan, which is assisting WA local governments with job creation and economic recovery.

“The Town’s CHRMAP identified the West End as being subject to coastal erosion hazards, resulting in immediate intolerable risk based on the social and economic value of the land.

“The current West End seawall infrastructure was constructed in 1912, sustaining damage over the decades from cyclones, tidal surges and erosion. This funding is critical and will help us manage a dynamic coastline”.
