Finucane Island Boat Ramp Groyne protects seafarers

Council has accepted the tender from WA Limestone Pty Ltd for the amount of $1,694,962.94 to construct the Finucane Island Boat Ramp Groyne (the Groyne), part of the site’s stage 1 works to improve seafarer safety and usability.

Detailed design for the new Groyne, which will be 100 metres long and constructed 10 metres to the west of the existing Ramp, was completed by MP Rogers & Associated Pty. Ltd.

$2.8 million in the Town’s 2020/21 annual budget has been allocated for the Groyne’s construction, sufficient to complete the required scope of works. The site’s total upgrade will be completed in four stages for a projected total cost of $4.5 million, with funds contributed by government and industry.

The Groyne will improve seafarer safety by stopping tidal surges which currently impact boating vessels and people in the area, as well as providing greater protection from cross winds.

The Groyne will also reduce rapid sand sediment accumulation on the Ramp, currently impacting the launching and retrieval of vessels.

A Land Heritage Survey was conducted by Archaeaus Pty Ltd in collaboration with representatives of the Marapikurrinya family group in December 2020: no new archaeological sites were found.

Mayor Peter Carter welcomed Council’s tender acceptance, green lighting the first stage of works at the site.

“There are 67 boats for every 1,000 residents in Hedland, which is why we want to upgrade the Finucance Island Boat Ramp to maximise the seafarer experience for the future.

“The Ramp is one of only two publically accessible boat ramps in Port Hedland, providing residents and visitors with a place to fish, socialise, launch boating vessels and enjoy the coastal atmosphere.

“Constructing a Groyne will protect Ramp users from tidal surges and cross winds, even more critical as future work stages increase user capacity by duplicating the existing Ramp.

“Other stage one works include the construction of a 2.4 metre wide walkway, bollards, parking bays, kerbsides and barriers, light poles, waiting lines, resurfacing existing pavements, new disability access ramps, footpaths and more.”
