Economic hardship eased through Town’s COVID-19 Assistance Grants

Published on Thursday, 24 September 2020 at 2:55:00 PM

Council has granted nearly $700,000 to Hedland based community groups and small businesses as part of the Town’s COVID-19 Assistance Grants, a result of the broader suite of COVID-19 relief measures endorsed by Council in April.

For the Community Group Assistance Fund, 30 applicants were successful and were granted a cumulative amount of $220,519.68, and for the Support Local Business Fund, 56 applicants were granted a cumulative amount of $477,876.19.

Hon. Commissioner Fred Riebeling AM JP said the Town was committed to ensuring local organisations were supported in a challenging economic environment.

“I welcome the Town’s granting of nearly $700,000 to local community groups and businesses doing it tough. Unprecedented restrictions on trading and travel have impacted communities across Australia, so I’m pleased the Town took an active step in easing some of the hardship through the COVID-19 Assistance Grants.

“Around 84% of applicants were successful in obtaining grant funds, reflecting the Town’s priority of ensuring a broad cross section of local organisations could access assistance.

“Some highlights of the funding include $10,000 for the Hedland Senior High School P&C Association to implement a Safe Separating Seating Project, $10,000 for the Hedland Women’s Refuge to raise awareness of family and domestic violence during COVID, and $9,103.24 to the Julyardi Aboriginal Corporation to continue to operate its Education and Communication Hub during COVID.”
