Council has endorsed the Economic Development and Tourism Strategy (the Strategy) to guide long-term direction for economic and tourism development in the Town of Port Hedland.
The Strategy sets out a range of strategic initiatives to drive the activities for the Town of Port Hedland to grow economic and tourism development with the goal of achieving over 5,000 new jobs and 11,600 new residents by 2041.
Development of the Strategy incorporated stakeholder input from key industry, business, associations, government and community members and highlights competitive advantages and issues in the region and the significant opportunities for growth.
Opportunities identified to promote economic diversity include housing, renewable energy, Mining Equipment, Technology and Services (METS), the Maritime Precinct, building local supply chains, community and social infrastructure, and the diversification of the region’s metals and minerals base.
Tourism is also an important contributing sector to the local economy - with increased visitor expenditure supporting local businesses there is an opportunity for growth and expansion.
The Town will lead the implementation of the Strategy in partnership with the WA Government, the Australian Government, regional development bodies, business, industry and partners with a focus on advocacy, marketing, infrastructure, planning and regulations, and supporting tourism.
Annual reviews of the strategy will track progress and monitor the strength of the economy and tourism sector and also identify emerging trends and areas for new focus.
Mayor Peter Carter welcomed the Council's endorsement of the Strategy to support the significant role the Town plays in the planning, advocating, and facilitating growth and investment to maximise economic and tourism opportunities.
“This Strategy will be the leading document for strategic economic growth and business support for the Town of Port Hedland, establishing a vision for development to achieve economic sustainability and growth outcomes for the area.
“The Town encourages innovation and this Strategy will help stimulate, support, attract and retain business activity in the region and enhance the diversity of employment opportunities.
“While there has been extensive consultation with various sectors and the community, the continued development and implementation of partnerships with key stakeholders will strengthen the promotion of economic growth and diversification, and help reach targets.
“The Strategy highlights that we all play a role in economic development - with a commitment amongst Government, businesses, community organisations and residents, we can all help support the build of a stronger economy for a sustainable community.”
