An ambitious Strategy to create over 5,000 new jobs and facilitate the growth of 11,600 new residents has been released for public comment.

Council endorsed the draft Economic Development and Tourism Strategy (the Strategy) for comment last night, as part of the Town’s commitment to a thriving, resilient, sustainable, and diverse economy.

The draft Strategy sets out a range of strategic initiatives to drive the activities for the Town to grow economic and tourism development. It is supported through a detailed action plan and will be reviewed annually.

Town of Port Hedland Mayor Peter Carter said that understanding emerging economic influences, evaluating the effectiveness of actions, and partnering with key stakeholders, will be key to a thriving economy.

“Our Port is one of the most significant pieces of economic infrastructure in Australia and plays a pivotal role in the current and future economic prosperity of the Town, State and nation”, he said.

“The Town of Port Hedland has a significant role in economic development, through planning, advocating, and facilitating better conditions for growth and investment, to promoting the Town’s competitive advantages.

“The Strategy does not exist in isolation. It leverages the Town’s local and strategic planning framework, regulatory framework, unique assets and services, relevant data, and specialist local knowledge.”

Focus areas to achieve the draft Strategy’s objectives include advocacy, marketing and promotion, infrastructure, and the Town’s role in facilitating growth.

The draft Strategy will be advertised for public comment for five weeks from 16 December 2021 – 20 January 2022. The draft Strategy is available online at https://www.porthedland.wa.gov.au/consultations/general/draft-economic-development-and-tourism-strategy  or can be viewed at the Town of Port Hedland Civic Centre, McGregor St Port Hedland, Monday-Friday 8.30 am to 4 pm.
