The community is invited to attend the Hedland Says No to Family Violence March on Thursday 25 November, from 6:30am in South Hedland Town Square.
Coordinated by the Hedland Family Violence Action Group, the event occurs on the International Day for the Elimination of Violence Against Women.
Coinciding with the state-wide 16 Days in WA campaign, a number of community events will be held from Wednesday 24 November until Wednesday 1 December, focussed on building safer, stronger communities free from family violence.
These local events are presented by the Hedland Family Violence Action Group and Supported by the Town, Julyardi Aboriginal Corporation, Hedland Aboriginal Strong Leaders, Fortescue and Lotterywest.
Stopping violence against women means promoting equality and respectful relationships, violence-free spaces and safer communities.
Mayor Peter Carter encouraged local residents, businesses and communities to attend the March.
“I’d like to thank the Hedland Family Violence Action Group for coordinating the 2021 Hedland Says No to Family Violence March, a time for the community to come together as one and say that family violence will not be tolerated.
“65 per cent of assaults recorded in Western Australia last year were related to family and domestic violence. Of the 22,257 victims, 73% were female.
“Breaking the cycle of family and domestic violence starts with respect for women. Everyone has a part to play by calling out disrespectful behaviour in all areas of life.
“By attending the march, you’ll be part of the grassroots movement to end family violence in our community.”
