The Town of Port Hedland Council endorsed action be taken on the future of childcare services across Port and South Hedland at Wednesday’s Council meeting, recognising increasing community concern.
The Town will now conduct a detailed analysis of child care service demand across the community, investigating the capability of existing providers and associated infrastructure to accommodate additional child care.
Specifically, the Port Hedland Library and South Hedland TAFE Campus child care building have already been identified as possible locations.
Mayor Camilo Blanco said this was an issue which directly impacted on the wellbeing of local families and the liveability of the Town.
“We will now create a business case recommending actions to address current and future child care service demand.
“It’s clear there is a deepening shortage of child care services in Hedland, with expectant mothers now placing unborn children on waitlists to secure placements.
“The Town has already discussed tenure options of the South Hedland TAFE space with the Department of Training and Workforce Development, and a Contractor has assessed Port Hedland Library’s potential activation.
“Even though childcare is not a core business of local government, we need to be proactive and do what we can to retain young families in Hedland.”
