Council has accepted the Tender from Pilbara Constructions for the amount of $495,000 to complete the demolition of existing structures at the Stevens Street Retirement Village site in Port Hedland. This follows Council’s February 2020 endorsement of the demolition of existing structures.
The Town is taking the advice of the Department of Planning, Lands and Heritage (DPLH) to delay any redevelopment on the site until DWER reviews the short term objectives of its Port Hedland Dust Program, expected during 2024. The contractor will leave the site clear and stabilised to manage any dust issues that could arise.
The Town’s Parks and Garden’s team will be removing several of the trees for replanting at other project sites within the district, with the contractor requested where possible to retain any large mature trees onsite which cannot be relocated. The Parks and Garden’s team will continue to maintain the area to minimise any fire hazard, and reduce potential for snakes.
In November 2018, the current facility was assessed as posing health and safety risks due to a lack of structural integrity. In December 2019, the Town issued new extension notices for residents at the time to leave the unsafe site by 28 February 2020. Following this, the Town worked with tenants to relocate them to safe, fit for purpose premises.
As well as taking DPLH’s advice in relation to redevelopment timelines, the Town is taking the Department of Mines, Industry, Regulation and Safety’s advice that any future facility operate as Senior’s Accommodation, rather than a Retirement Village, in line with definitions outlined in the Retirement Villages Act 1992.
Items such as photos and art remaining on site have been retained by the Town’s Library Team to be catalogued and digitised.
