The Town and contractor Yurra have completed stage one works at South Hedland Cemetery, representing a $900,000 investment in the site.

Initial works began in May and included the installation of new accessible ablutions, shaded areas, landscaping, seating, lawns, concreting, a new ring road, pathway and accessibility improvements and a refurbished entrance way.

Stage one works are the first part of realising the site’s five year masterplan, seeking to create a peaceful and serene space for local residents to pay their respects.

Mayor Peter Carter commended the completion of stage one works.

“The completion of stage one works at South Hedland Cemetery represents the Town’s delivery of core infrastructure investments for Hedland’s future.

“This is a site of great significance to many. It’s a place of respect, reflection and resonance, upgraded to the contemporary standards our community deserves.

“Engaging contractors Yurra, a business established in 2010 to deliver sustainable procurement benefits, has supported local jobs and the economy in a challenging business environment.

“When you walk through the entrance, you’ll notice improved landscaping and palms which suit the Pilbara environment.”
