Community sentiment measured in 2019 Annual Perception Survey

Published on Monday, 30 March 2020 at 10:44:49 AM

The Town of Port Hedland has noted the results of the 2019 Annual Perception Survey (APS), detailing community sentiment across a number of key indicators.

There was an overall marginal decline from 2018 to 2019, with the average satisfaction rating falling from 3.25 to 3.22 out of 5. In essence, this decline was mainly attributed to the suspension of the Council, causing a decrease in leadership confidence.

2019 was the 10th consecutive year the Town had run the APS, garnering a total of 895 responses from hard copy and online questionnaires.

From 2018 to 2019, perceptions of belonging and satisfaction increased, with perceptions of safety and governance decreasing.

Hon. Commissioner Fred Riebeling AM JP said the results of the survey reflected the constructive work which had been undertaken by the Town over the last 12 months.

“I’d like to thank everyone in the community who took the time to complete the APS, providing members of the Executive Team with crucial decision making information.

“I’m pleased to see an increase in people’s sense of belonging, pointing to a greater understanding of community spirit and engagement. There has also been an increase in perceptions of Council service delivery, which is our core function in the community across our facilities.

“The issue of safety at night came up again this year. Improving lighting and accessibility is a key factor in the town comprehensive upgrades of public pathway network, as is identifying new locations for CCTV installation.

“The information obtained from the APS aligns with goals set out in the Strategic Community Plan, our guiding document in all decision making.

“We continue to use the community feedback obtained in the survey to guide our areas of focus and investments: for example, investing in space for the delivery of additional child care services.”
