Coastal Erosion Hazard Mapping - Community Information Sessions

Published on Wednesday, 3 October 2018 at 10:56:55 AM

The Town of Port Hedland is encouraging the community to attend information sessions regarding a draft Coastal Hazard Risk Management and Adaptation Plan (CHRMAP).

The draft CHRMAP identifies land and assets within the Port Hedland townsite that are vulnerable to coastal erosion and flooding and provides a long term adaptation framework.

The project supports the state government’s recommended risk management approach for decision making relating to coastal hazards.

Erosion and flooding of coastal areas, particularly during major storm events, has the potential to significantly impact on coastal development and enjoyment. If not planned for, coastal processes can damage public and private assets and facilities.

The Town of Port Hedland previously investigated coastal hazards with the 2011 Coastal Vulnerability Study. The draft CHRMAP prepared in 2018 further explores the risk to the community and property owners as a result of these hazards and identifies adaptation approaches to mitigate that risk in vulnerable areas.

Information sessions about the project will be held:

When: Saturday 20 October 2018

Session 1 from 1pm – 2.30pm

Session 2 from 3pm to 4.30pm

Where: Colin Matheson Pavilion, Corney St Port Hedland

Town of Port Hedland CEO David Pentz said the draft CHRMAP had been prepared based on community input provided through surveys and focus groups in 2017.

“The draft CHRMAP identifies some important decisions that Council and community will need to make in the coming years. I strongly encourage the community to come along to the sessions to find out about the risks, and how we can work together with state government to adapt over time,” he said.
