Published on Tuesday, 2 July 2019 at 4:13:04 PM

The 2019 Hedland NAIDOC Week Concert will be held on Sunday 7 July from 4pm to 8pm at South Hedland Town Square, celebrating this year’s NAIDOC theme: Voice, Treaty, Truth.

This year’s event is presented by Julyardi Aboriginal Corporation, Hedland Aboriginal Strong Leaders, Kariyarra Employment, Training and Education Aboriginal Organisation and the Town of Port Hedland.

South Hedland Town Square will come alive with Main River Band, traditional dancing, a sausage sizzle and more entertainment for all ages to enjoy.

There will also be an official welcome to country and flag raising ceremony at this family friendly, drug and alcohol free event.

Mayor Camilo Blanco said NAIDOC Week was an important time of the year which gave the community the opportunity to reflect on its meaning.

“NAIDOC Week celebrates the history, culture and achievements of all Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people.

“The traditional custodians of the land on which our town is on are the Kariyarra, Ngarla and Nyamal people; we recognise their strength and resilience and pay our respect to their elders past and present.

Voice, Treaty, Truth refers to the aspiration of a substantive treaty being formed in Australia which faces the truth of our past and provides formal acknowledgement of first nations people.

“The Pilbara is home to some of the oldest continual cultures on Earth, with a unique connection to the land and waters.

“This concert is a way for people of all backgrounds to come together for an enjoyable, fun evening in South Hedland whilst also embracing the NAIDOC spirit.

“I hope everyone gets the chance to come down and celebrate Voice, Treaty, Truth.”
