Celebrate National Science Week with the Town of Port Hedland Libraries

Published on Thursday, 13 August 2020 at 2:09:54 PM

The Town of Port Hedland Libraries will be celebrating National Science Week from Saturday 15 August to Sunday 23 August, giving local primary school aged children the opportunity to talk science, see science and do science.

Established in 1997 and run every August, National Science Week acknowledges and celebrates the contributions of Australian scientists to the world of knowledge.

ChemCentre, WA’s leading provider of specialised chemical and forensic science services, has provided the libraries with 200 take-home chemistry kits for primary school age students which can be collected during the week.

South Hedland Library will hold a special science based story time for 2 to 5 years olds on Thursday 20 August at 10:30am. Please contact 08 9158 9373 to book in your child's place.

There will be science displays at the libraries, as well as make your own experiments, microscopes, magnifying glasses, bug catches and sensory toys available to play and explore nature.

Hon. Commissioner Fred Riebeling AM JP encouraged local families to get involved and reflect on the important role science plays in our everyday lives.

“More than ever, science plays a vital role in finding answers to life’s big questions and challenges. Life changing medical research, COVID-19 vaccine testing and advanced scientific discovery is thanks to the work of scientists all over the world.

“I’m pleased Port Hedland Libraries are running a number of interactive activities throughout National Science Week for primary school aged children to enjoy. Sharing the magic of how science shapes our society leads to lifelong appreciation.

“I’d like to thank ChemCentre for providing the Libraries with take-home chemistry kits, giving our local young people the chance to get hands on with science in their own household.”
