Council have endorsed the awarding of the contract for the Safer Communities CCTV Network upgrade to Avantgarde Technologies, following the Town’s success in obtaining a grant from the Commonwealth Government.
The Safer Communities Fund is a Federal Government initiative, providing local councils and community organisations with grants of up to $1 million for security infrastructure to address crime and anti-social behaviour.
The scope of works will include the following, which was informed by consultation with the WA Police:
- South Hedland Skate Park: 2 new cameras
- Centenary Park (South Hedland): 2 new cameras
- McDonald's Carpark: 2 new cameras
- McLarty Boulevard: 2 new cameras and pole
- Marquee Park: interconnect existing cameras into CCTV Network
- Wilson St and McGregor St: 2 new cameras and pole
- Great Northern Highway (near Walkabout Hotel): 2 new cameras and pole
- Wanangkura Stadium: upgrade 13 cameras and connect all cameras to CCTV Network
Mayor Camilo Blanco welcomed the award of the contract, emphasising the important crime fighting role CCTV plays in communities.
“During the SCP consultation process, locals indicated that crime and anti-social behaviour remained a top of mind concern.
“CCTV gives our local law enforcement the information they need to track down offenders and bring them to justice, as well as acting as a deterrent for would be criminals.
“I’d like to thank the Federal Government for prioritising crime prevention in their budget, and I look forward to seeing the new CCTV upgrades up and running.”
