Be Prepared for Cyclone Season with the Annual Green Waste Clean Up

Published on Friday, 30 August 2019 at 8:32:50 AM

Palm fronds, tree loppings, branches and grass clippings are just some of the green waste items community members are encouraged to dispose of through the Town of Port Hedland’s annual Pre-Cyclone Season Clean Up.

As part of the Town’s community service, the yearly green waste collection enables residents and community members to clear yards and gardens of debris ahead of the upcoming cyclone season.

Hon. Commissioner Fred Riebeling said his was a prime opportunity for community members to be prepared for cyclone season.

“The annual free green waste collection will commence from Tuesday 1 October, running for approximately three weeks.

“I encourage all community members to clear out homes and work areas of unwanted materials and rubbish, clear drains of obstructions, and trim trees of excess height and growth that will enable them to withstand high winds.

“As part of preparing our homes and premises for potential catastrophic weather events, it is important that we minimise the risk of flying debris.

“During this time it is also an excellent opportunity to think about the disposal of other waste from yards and to consider additional measures to prepare for a cyclone.

“Residents can dispose of residential household refuse and debris at South Hedland, Landfill free of charge.

“Residents and property owners are asked to neatly stack green waste on their verge and ensure it does not obstruct footpaths, street lighting, water metres, fencing, driveways, drainage pits or roadways.

“The Town’s free collection includes all green waste - tree loppings, palm fronds, branches, leaves, grass clippings, weeds - and must be no longer than 2 metres in length and be able to be carried by two people.”

Residents need to ensure that all waste is on the curb by Tuesday 1 October 2019.
