Published on Monday, 16 November 2020 at 11:43:35 AM

Professional Australian basketball player, Greg Hire, will be the special guest at SLAM basketball in Wanangkura Stadium, 4pm to 7pm Friday 20 November.

This event is presented by the JD Hardie Youth and Community Hub and made possible by the Department of Local Government, Sport and Cultural Industries and Garnduwa.

This free event will give 12 to 18 year olds the chance to meet and interact with Hire, who played years of US college basketball before joining the Perth Wildcats in 2010.

Hire won his first championship as a Wildcat in 2014 and went on to win three more championships in 2016, 2017 and 2019. He is also the founder of a Stitch in Time Foundation, which provides a range of youth programs and services across WA.

The SLAM basketball training workshops will be followed by a round robin basketball competition, capping off with a free feed.

Mayor Peter Carter encourages local young people to come along to the event and meet a professional basketball star.

“The Town, Department of Local Government, Sport and Cultural Industries and Garnduwa have worked together to bring basketball superstar to the SLAM program.

“Hire is an inspiration for our local young people, exemplifying the heights that dedication, training and passion can take you in the sporting world.

“Hedland’s young people enthusiastically participate in SLAM basketball year round, so it’s fantastic to have Hire in town to mentor and interact with participants.

“The Town is committed to holding activities which give voice to youth, recognising the critical role they play in guiding the future of Hedland.”
