Australia Day to go off with a splash and a bang

Published on Thursday, 9 January 2020 at 9:05:39 AM

Australia Day festivities will return on 26 January with the Town of Port Hedland hosting three community events.

From 2:00pm, community members are invited to the free BHP Community Pool Party at the South Hedland Aquatic Centre, where there will be heaps of entertainment and activities on offer.

Following the Pool Party, the Pilbara Ports Authority Fireworks Spectacular will take place at 8:00pm at the Kevin Scott Oval, with food vans available and live music on site from 6:30pm.

There will also be an invite-only Australia Day Breakfast for Community Citizen of the Year nominees and the Citizenship Ceremony in the morning.

Hon. Commissioner Fred Riebeling said he was looking forward to celebrating the Australian spirit with the Hedland community.

“The event-filled day will kick off with a breakfast to welcome our new citizens and honour our Hedland heroes.

“There will be a number of games and activities taking place at the pool throughout the afternoon, which will be a huge draw card for families with young children.

“Later, the Fireworks Spectacular will cater to everyone as we light up the sky in Australia Day tradition.

“With free entry at both events, it’s a great opportunity for the whole community to come together and celebrate the day.

“I would like to thank the Pilbara Ports Authority for again sponsoring the Fireworks Spectacular and BHP for sponsoring the Pool Party.”
