Access to childcare and the Town of Port Hedland’s commitment to achieving positive social outcomes for youth were among topics discussed at a tour of JD Hardie Youth and Community Hub on Tuesday afternoon.
Assistant Minister to the Prime Minister Patrick Gorman joined Mayor Peter Carter and chief executive officer Carl Askew for the tour, where he got a firsthand look at one of the hub’s new Youth Centre programs Girls Crew, as well as shooting some hoops with youth from the Clontarf Academy.
Mr Gorman was also shown the Stage 2 redevelopment of the hub, which includes the shaded outdoor basketball courts, while being briefed on plans for Stage 3 – BMX ramps and pump track and a separate childcare centre.
Mayor Carter said the Town’s commitment to invest in programs, activities and facilities to engage youth – such as the redeveloped JD Hardie Youth and Community Hub – was a proactive approach to tackling social issues.
“We are proud of our programs which engage Hedland youth and help them to develop personal and social skills,” Mayor Carter said.
“Investing in programs and facilities for our youth is a proactive approach that helps build resilience and provide them with the skills and information to make positive lifestyle choices.
"It is a way for them to connect with other young people in a safe and engaging environment.”
Mayor Carter said access to childcare remained one of Hedland’s primary challenges and the proposed centre would help transform JD Hardie into a holistic facility for parent and families.
“It is another important step in helping address childcare issues in Hedland,” he said.
Mayor Carter thanked Assistant Minister Gorman for taking the time to tour the JD Hardie hub and his interest in advancing youth issues in Hedland.
“We want to continue to build our relationships with the Federal Government to take a collaborative approach to overcoming our challenges while also investing in a vibrant, resilient Hedland into the future.”
Mr Gorman was impressed with the programs and services offered at the JD Hardie Youth and Community Hub.
“Thank you to the Port Hedland community for welcoming the Federal Cabinet so warmly," he said.
"The JD Hardie Youth and Community Hub offers so much for the Hedland community.
"It’s a huge credit to the Town of Port Hedland team who have created an effective youth engagement centre.
"Thanks to the staff, the Clontarf basketballers and the Girls Crew for speaking with me and showing me how the Centre is putting local youth first.”
