Arts and Culture Strategy sets the stage for vibrant creative future

Published on Thursday, 23 July 2020 at 1:30:56 PM

Council’s endorsement of the Town’s Arts and Culture Strategy 2019-2022 annual performance report highlights an optimistic future for the local creative industries, despite recent challenges.

Since endorsement in 2019, over 70% of the Strategy’s actions have either been completed or are on track for completion.

Highlights include the development of a free community events toolkit, introduction of the Sunset Food Markets, the establishment of a three year BHP events partnership, a new Port Hedland Library, an increased public art percentage policy in infrastructure developments and a renewed focus on programming that actively engages youth.

The Strategy serves as a blueprint for the Town’s Elected Members, Executive Team, staff and community stakeholders in planning and supporting arts and cultural initiatives.

Hon. Commissioner Fred Riebeling AM JP said the annual performance report was a sign of optimism for a sector particularly hard hit by COVID-19 restrictions.

“I’d like to commend the Town and community for contributing to the successful delivery of the Arts and Culture Strategy 2019-2022, which has laid the groundwork for a collaborative and community focussed approach to arts and culture initiatives into the future.

“Clearly, COVID-19 restrictions have drastically changed how creatives engage with audiences. Locally, we’ve seen admirable adaptability through the rise of virtual art galleries, virtual events and a renewed focus on buying locally.

“Nationally and in WA, the creative industries have been one of the hardest hit sectors in the economic downturn. However, I’m confident that as restrictions ease, consumer confidence will strengthen and people will be eager to support the endeavours of local creatives with renewed vigour.

“The Town continues to innovate in the current climate, with the See You At… Neighbourhood Events giving people the opportunity to venture out to small scale gatherings.

“As we continue to implement the Strategy’s actions, the Town is committed to providing long term opportunity and prosperity for Hedland’s creative industries.”
