The Town is inviting Hedland based businesses, community organisations and not-for-profits to submit their NAIDOC Week events for inclusion in the Town’s collective community calendar.  This year’s NAIDOC Week runs from Sunday 3 to Sunday 10 July. The Town’s calendar will be available in hard copy and online formats, providing a central point of information about what’s happening in Hedland during the week. NAIDOC Week celebrates and recognises the history, culture and achievements of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples. The Week is an opportunity for all Australians to learn about First Nations cultures and histories and participate in celebrations of the oldest, continuous living cultures on earth.  We all must continue to Get Up! Stand Up! Show Up! for systemic change and keep rallying around our mob, our Elders and our communities. The NAIDOC Week opening event is on Sunday 3 July from 11:00am to 4:00pm at South Hedland Town Square, featuring Welcome to Country, smoking ceremony, flag raising, presentation of the Hedland NAIDOC Awards, traditional dance performances, live music, food vendors and family friendly activities. Mayor Peter Carter encourages Hedland based organisations to be a part of this year’s celebrations. “We’re looking forward to NAIDOC Week, a time to celebrate the culture and experiences of the Kariyarra, Ngarla and Nyamal peoples, as well as all Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples and communities across Australia. “Do you know an Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander person making their mark in the community? Hedland Aboriginal Strong Leaders are seeking nominations for the 2022 Port Hedland NAIDOC Awards. Nominations close 5pm Wednesday 8 June.“We invite all local organisations to submit their NAIDOC Week events for inclusion in our collective calendar, which will be available in hard copy and digital format in June."Please email your organisation’s event for inclusion in the calendar via ethompson@porthedland.wa.gov.au by Wednesday 8 June 2022.
