Members of the Hedland community have regenerated the 1939 Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer classic, The Wizard of Oz, with a distinctively Pilbara twist for the local stage.
Made possible by the support of the Roy Hill Community Foundation, Claire Demmer’s The Wizard of Odd musical transports Dorothy and Koko to a magically odd world of wonder under the spell of the Wicked Witch of Wedgefield.
Created through the inspiration and perspiration of local school students, teachers, parents, volunteers and members of the Matt Dann Theatre and Cinema, the musical will be performed on Friday 9 and Saturday 10 August at 7.30pm.
Driven by Creative Director Elise Batchelor, the musical is a grassroots effort of creativity giving a new generation an appreciation for both the original tale and their own Pilbara identity.
Hon. Commissioner Fred Riebeling said the musical was the result of months of hard work, exemplifying the positive impacts of grassroots theatre in Hedland.
“I’d like to commend all those involved for making this production a possibility, giving young people across Hedland the unique opportunity to express themselves in the Land of Odd.
“The Matt Dann Theatre and Cinema has a strong record of supporting grassroots theatre, providing professional grade stage management, direction and mentor-ship to local creatives.
“We appreciate the support of the Roy Hill Community Foundation, whose ongoing investment in local communities aligns with our goal to craft a livable and inclusive town.
“Every element of the production, from the hand crafted stage props down to the detailed custom costumes, have resulted in a live experience for audiences on par with metropolitan centres.
“The level of enthusiasm for the shows have seen tickets selling quickly, so I’d encourage everyone to secure yours before they sell out.”
