2019/20 Rating Strategy Open for Consultation

Published on Wednesday, 1 May 2019 at 3:24:37 PM

A commitment to uniformity is the guiding principle of the Town of Port Hedland’s 2019/20 rating strategy, which is now open for public comment until 12pm, Wednesday 22 May 2019.

The rating strategy determines the distribution of the rates yield for the coming financial year across the categories of GRV Residential, GRV Commercial / Industrial, GRV Mass and Tourist Accommodation, UV Mining and Other and UV Pastoral.

The Town’s proposed strategy would apply a 4% increase on rating categories, excluding GRV Mass and Tourist Accommodation and UV Mining and Other.

The 2018/19 year saw a significant transition towards a more equitable distribution of the overall rates yield resulting in a reduction to the burden carried by residential ratepayers.  Mayor Camilo Blanco said the 2019/20 strategy struck the right balance between fairness and revenue raising.

“As a Town, we need to ensure our rates yield is sufficient to secure our financial viability for the coming financial year.

“The ongoing work of renewing the town’s core infrastructure assets, providing community services and improving liveability incurs a cost.

“Essentially, this year’s strategy continues to move towards uniformity, providing certainty and consistency for rate payers within a long term rates model.

“We want to achieve a strategy which allows property values to be the determinant factor in how a property’s rates are collected.

“I encourage everyone to peruse the Statement of Objects and Reasons 2019/20, and submit your feedback by the deadline.”

Consultation can be completed via post addressed to the Chief Executive Officer, Town of Port Hedland, PO Box 41, Port Hedland WA 6721 and clearly marked Submission – Differential Rating 2019/20.
