Council has noted the Town’s five-year street tree planting programme, set to see 1,200 trees planted adjacent to high-volume roads across the local government area from 2021 to 2026.
The programme is budgeted to cost $150,000 per financial year, with the total programme costing $750,000.
More trees will lead to a softer landscape, assist in dust suppression efforts, cooling of public spaces and better shade to protect pedestrians and drivers.
Mayor Peter T Carter Welcomed Council’s noting of the Town’s programme.
“Local residents, community groups and businesses all want to see more trees being planted in Hedland. This is something we’ve heard in many community surveys, so I’m pleased the Town will be planting 1,200 trees over the next five years to reflect the community’s sentiment.
“The locations selected for tree planting over the next five years are high-volume when it comes to drivers and pedestrians, so we’re maximising the trees’ impact.
“More trees will contribute to town wide dust suppression efforts, complimenting the existing West End greening programme.
“As one of the hottest parts of the country, planting more trees suitable for the Pilbara climate always makes sense.”
