Council Working Groups

Community Safety & Crime Prevention

State Government agency regional managers are working in partnership with Council through a Working Group to address anti-social behaviours and crime within the Town. Some of the initiatives currently being pursued by the Working Group are:

  • development of an 'Itinerants Strategy' with the traditional owners, the Kariyarra people, to encourage visitors to the Town to respect their land and culture;
  • measures to combat public drinking around the South Hedland CBD and adjacent areas;
  • strategies to encourage regular high school attendance and reduce truancy levels; and
  • voluntary bans by businesses on serving school age children during regular school hours.

Community Safety Indicators are being used to measure the success of strategies agreed in the plan. The current Indicators can be viewed on Council's website. Since the Law and Order Survey was conducted in May 2003, the 'Port Hedland Community Safety and Crime Prevention Plan' was agreed between key stakeholders, and the Community Safety Working Group was formed.
