Sheppard take Aria #1

Published: Friday, 20 July at 1:32pm

Sheppard’s second album ‘Watching the Sky’ has stormed home this week, landing at #1 on the ARIA Albums chart as the band trekked across the country to meet fans.

With their single ‘Hometown’ riding high at radio and on Seven’s ‘House Rules’ promos, the band have gone one better than their #2 debut ‘Bombs Away’, proving not only that the Australian public still love pop rock, but also that you don’t need a major label to hit the top.

“This album has been over three years in the making and for it to reach the top is both satisfying and humbling,” said George Sheppard.

“Thank you to all our fans and those that have helped us on our journey. Our first number one album is such a special milestone for us…… we’ll be celebrating tonight!”

Refusing to be defined by either their success or their detractors, Sheppard have steered their own ship as an independent band, making their own decisions and building a dedicated team that has proven a strong alternative to the majors. ‘Watching the Sky’ is the fifth Australian album to top the ARIA albums chart this year, with all five coming from indie labels, highlighting a shift in the Australian music landscape.

“Sheppard have well and truly shown that even in the world of pop rock, independent is the way to go and it’s a sign that where Aussie music is concerned, the majors are well off the pace,” said Sheppard manager Michael Chugg.

‘Watching The Sky’ features 14 brand new Sheppard tracks including the Australian hits ‘Hometown’, ‘Keep Me Crazy’ and ‘Coming Home’ and Latin American top 10 ‘Edge Of The Night’.

Sheppard are set to take the stage at the upcoming North West Festival on August 25 & 26. Tickets are available here.
