You're Invited to Make Hedland's History

Published on Thursday, 5 July 2018 at 9:41:52 AM

A new Pilbara Regional Council initiative is seeking to expand Hedland’s history collection, preserving the region’s unique identity for future generations to appreciate.

The Town of Port Hedland Libraries are running a number of sessions throughout July, where community members are encouraged to bring along a number of noteworthy historical items for preservation.

These can include family photographs, letters, diary pages, newspaper clippings, wills, deeds, essays and artefacts, which will then be scanned and stored electronically at the session.

Mayor Camilo Blanco said the initiative was an opportunity for the community to take an active role in contributing to Hedland’s Historical collection.

“Our diverse community has so many unique stories, which are often told through collections of photos, diaries and artefacts.

“Whether you have photos of the old post office or the wool train of the early twentieth century, or perhaps a newspaper article on Cyclone Dean, I encourage everyone to look through their storage and see if they can find any gems.

“Even if you’re not sure if the item is noteworthy, it’s worth bringing an item along to a session to assess its significance.

“I’m so pleased that Richard Offen, an Author, Historian and Broadcaster, will be the special guest facilitator at the sessions.

This project is supported by the Department of Local Government, Sport and Cultural Industries, the Department of Primary Industries and Regional Development, The Town of Port Hedland and the Pilbara Regional Council.
