Reset in Direction for Port Hedland Waste Management

Published on Thursday, 16 August 2018 at 2:18:05 PM

A previously standing agreement between the Town of Port Hedland and Waste 2 Gas Pty Ltd has been mutually terminated.

The Pilbara Regional Waste Solution: Diversion, Processing and Power Agreement was signed in June 2016, with the intention of Waste 2 Gas processing South Hedland Landfill Waste into Syngas for electricity production.

The agreement was part of a broader regional framework known as The Pilbara Waste to Energy Project, designed to reduce the environmental impacts of landfill in the Pilbara.

The decision to end the agreement was made on a mutually beneficial basis, with the two parties pointing to a number of causal factors.

Mayor Camilo Blanco said the end of this agreement was not the end for renewable waste management in Port Hedland.

“The intent of this agreement was based on reducing human impacts and finding sustainable waste management solutions between Council and private industry.

Mr. Jason Pugh, Chief Executive Officer for New Energy Corporation PTY LTD said that unfortunately, due to a number of factors outside of our collective control, the agreement was not able to be realised as intended at this stage.

“Despite this agreement ending, New Energy has a clear strategy to delivery this important project to the Pilbara and working towards reducing the impacts of landfill waste.”
