Regions to Benefit from Rural Fire Service Division

Published on Wednesday, 6 June 2018 at 8:18:41 AM

Key regional representatives met in Port Hedland last Saturday to discuss the establishment of the new $80 million Rural Fire Division across regional WA.

The Rural Fire Division is coordinated by the Department of Fire and Emergency Services, with the aim of improving regional bushfire management.

Mayor Camilo Blanco welcomed the Division’s establishment and its intention to better coordinate local and state services.

“I was pleased to meet with Minister for Emergency Services the Hon. Francis Logan, Member for the Pilbara Kevin Michel MLA, Fire and Emergency Services Commissioner Darren Klemm, Port and South Hedland Volunteer Fire Brigades, the Town of Port Hedland Bushfire Brigade and the SES to discuss this important initiative.

“Our region experiences many bushfires throughout the year, which pose potential threats to residential and industrial zones.

“Fighting fires is an inherently risky business, and the teamwork, dedication and coordinated efforts shown by our local volunteers are outstanding. On behalf of the community, I would like to thank every one of them for their great work.

“This division will harness the expertise and experience our local bushfire volunteers bring to the field.

“I hope that it will strengthen the relationship between local Volunteers, the Council and the State Government to maximise both the prevention and response mechanisms available to fight fires and keep our communities safe.”
