Record Crowds for Opera Under the Stars

Published on Friday, 9 February 2018 at 12:00:00 AM

Around 200 locals from across the region attended ‘Opera under the Stars’ last Saturday night, an outdoor event held in Port Hedland’s Civic Centre Gardens.

WA Opera’s performance of ‘La Boheme’, staged in Perth’s Supreme Courts Gardens, was simulcast to regional towns across WA.

Mayor Camilo Blanco said the event attracted a record crowd and provided a unique opportunity for the local community.

“To have such a quality live simulcast by our State Opera Company in Port Hedland at the same time as the City and other regional areas was a fantastic experience for all.”

“2018 has seen a significant increase on last year’s attendance and points to a demand from locals to have access to leading WA and national arts events.”

“We’ve recently conducted extensive community surveying, and people are keen to see more outdoor events and a broad cross-section of activities.”

“We look forward to delivering diverse and dynamic events for the town in 2018, including more live simulcasts, movies and Spinifex Spree and the North West Festival.”

“Importantly, our upcoming events will be informed by listening and responding to the community and providing more outdoor, family-friendly events which engage our young people.”
