Port Hedland locals celebrated in Citizen of the Year and Sports Awards

Outstanding locals and community and sporting groups were the winners at the Australia Day Breakfast presented by Soroptimist International Port Hedland and the Town of Port Hedland this morning.

Port Hedland Mayor Camilo Blanco congratulated the award winners, thanking them for their valuable contributions to our community.

“All winners and nominees should be proud of themselves for being recognised at this level for their roles as ambassadors within our town,” said Mayor Blanco.

“It was an honour to meet all of these incredible people, who do so much to help to make Port Hedland a place we are proud to call home,” he said.

“Clayton Hanrahan has been awarded Citizen of the Year, for his significant contribution to youth and families of the community and being a great example of a community champion".

“Georgia Latham received the Citizen of the Year: Junior award for her contribution to the youth of our community through sport".

“Beryl Adamson has been awarded the Citizen of the Year: Senior award for being an excellent example of what being part of the community means".

“The award for Active Citizenship was given to Port Hedland St John Ambulance Volunteers for providing an outstanding and critical service to the community".

“Mackayla Denney received the Junior Sports Person of the Year award for her commendable dedication to one sport and personal development".

“Our Sporting Volunteer of the Year is Wayne Stokes for going well beyond what’s required and can be expected of a volunteer".

“Nathan Groch was awarded Sports Star of the Year. Nathan is an outstanding example of commitment and determination, having achieved at the highest level in Triathlon and Ironman events".

“Finally, Port Hedland Netball Association was awarded the Sporting Club of the Year award for showing determination and grit to succeed in their Port Hedland Netball Pavilion project developed over a number of years".

“Congratulations to all winners who were presented with their awards at this morning's Australia Day Breakfast.”
