Off road Vehicles the Target for Rangers and Police

Published on Monday, 11 December 2017 at 12:00:00 AM

Community safety is the critical message in a recent collaboration between the Town of Port Hedland Rangers, and the Western Australian Police.

Ongoing statistics show that there has been a dramatic increase in the number of off-road vehicles being operated illegally on streets, foreshores and reserves in the Port Hedland region, causing damage to the environment and a significant safety risk to community members.

Town of Port Hedland Mayor Camilo Blanco said that it was time the Rangers and the Police combined their resources to tackle this issue.

“We are seeing the likes of young children, unsupervised and with no safety gear, driving high powered off-road vehicles all over town,” Mayor Blanco explained.

“This is extremely concerning, not only for the offender if something were to happen, but for those innocent bystanders who can get caught up in the event of an accident,” he said.

“Both the Town of Port Hedland and the Police are here to ensure the safety of our community, and this program is an essential step in that direction.”

The program will run throughout the summer and will target priority locations identified by both the Rangers and Police with combined patrols and a media campaign promoting the safe and legal use of off-road vehicles.
