Merv Stanton Awarded Honorary Freeman of the Town

Published on Friday, 17 November 2017 at 12:00:00 AM

The Town of Port Hedland Council has voted to honour Mr. Mervyn Stanton with the title of Honorary Freeman.

The decision to award the Title was made at the Ordinary Council meeting on 1 November 2017, and recognises individuals of high honour.

Mayor of Port Hedland, Camilo Blanco, believes that this title recognises Mr. Stanton’s contribution to both local and national service, and the community.

“This is a respectable privilege reserved for those who have served the community”, he said.

“Mr. Stanton was a well-known and respected member of the Port Hedland community and our last surviving World War II veteran. He moved to the area in 1948 and started working for the Port Authority, where he gave 42 years of service. He also worked as a volunteer with the Retired Services League and was a driver for senior citizens in the community”.

“Mr. Stanton has held a significant presence in our community for as long as I can remember, and he will be greatly missed. His service in World War II was diverse and substantial, and I know that our ANZAC Day commemorations will not be the same without him in the coming years. He was a high profile local icon, and also a great support and inspiration to many of us”.

Mr Stanton passed away Tuesday 24 October 2017. He will be laid to rest with his wife at the Pioneer Cemetery in Port Hedland tomorrow, Saturday 18 November 2017.
