Hedland Recognised in Tidy Towns Awards

Published on Friday, 17 August 2018 at 11:04:08 AM

Port Hedland has been selected as a finalist in this year’s prestigious WA Tidy Towns Awards.

The town has been nominated for the Sustainable Communities State Title 2018, as well as in the categories of Litter Prevention and Waste Management and Environmental Sustainability.

These awards are coordinated by Keep Australia Beautiful WA, an organisation which provides leadership in the field of litter prevention and reduction in the State.

Mayor Camilo Blanco said the award nominations reflected the hard work of Council staff, local community organisations and volunteers to improve Hedland’s liveability and environmental sustainability.

“Improving Liveability and fostering a clean, family friendly environment were key desires which residents identified in this year’s Strategic Community Plan.

“In line with the Litter Prevention Strategy for WA 2015-2020, the Town has made it a top priority to reduce litter in public spaces and improve our waste management processes.

“This work has been a collaborative effort over a number of years, with local organisations such as the Care for Hedland Environment Association playing an instrumental role in spreading public awareness, coordinating volunteers and doing the hard yards.

Chairperson of the Care for Hedland Environmental Association, Kelly Howlett, believes that Hedland has a good chance of taking out this year’s competition.

“The community spirit and the sheer volume of events that we have in our community demonstrating pride, making a difference and celebrating what makes living in Hedland so special is a highlight that sets us apart from many other regional Western Australian communities,” she said.

The Awards Ceremony will be held on Friday, 21 September in Perth. More information can be found at https://www.kabc.wa.gov.au/get-involved/tidy-towns-sustainable-communities
