First Step in Securing Discount Airfares for the Region

Published on Monday, 4 September 2017 at 12:00:00 AM

The Town of Port Hedland has welcomed Friday's announcement by Qantas to introduce a 12 month trial of discounted airfares of up to 30 per cent in six regional areas impacted by the resources industry.

Discounts will be offered on Qantas-controlled components of its airfares for residents travelling between their local airport and Perth. This includes flights between Perth and Broome, Kalgoorlie, Karratha, Paraburdoo, Newman and Port Hedland.

The announcement follows a state-wide public inquiry into the price of regional airfares as recently held in Perth and Karratha.  The Town of Port Hedland presented a submission to the inquiry and represented its position and community feedback at the Karratha Hearing on 23 August 2017.

Mayor of the Town of Port Hedland, Camilo Blanco, said the announcement was a significant win for Port Hedland residents and the broader region but called for a greater commitment to achieving a sustainable solution.

“This is a fantastic first step, and we applaud Qantas and the State Government for taking the lead on this long-standing issue for our region.

“The social cost of highly priced airfares is having a significant impact on our community.  From family separation, reduced education options, tourism, employee retention and overall lifestyle – residents in the North West have been doing it tough.

“What we now need to do is unlock the industry, create lasting change and connect the regions for the benefit of all West Australians and visitors.”

The Qantas trial will commence in November 2017.   Further information can be found at www.qantas.com.au. Results of the Parliamentary Inquiry into regional airfares will be released to the public in the coming months.
