Dash to the Libraries to Catch National Simultaneous Storytime

Published on Monday, 14 May 2018 at 8:19:29 AM

A love of literacy and reading will take centre stage during National Simultaneous Storytime on Wednesday, 23 May.

Both Port and South Hedland Libraries will be participating at 11am.

This event is held annually by the Australian Library and Information Association (ALIA), seeking to promote literacy through the simultaneous reading of an Australian children’s book across hundreds of locations.

The chosen novel this year is Tony Wilson’s Hickory Dickory Dash, an entertaining tale about a cat and mouse chase which sees a mother mouse searching for her sons.

Port Hedland Mayor Camilo Blanco said the event was a wonderful chance to come together, have fun and reflect on the importance of literacy.

“The Hedland community is joining a national event which last year had over 686,324 participants, in over 6,129 locations across Australia.

“Now in its 18th successful year, the simultaneous reading engages young people in an event of national scope and personal significance.

“As a community, we need to pass on the message to our young people that strong literacy skills open doors for their future.

“I hope as many locals as possible have the opportunity to attend the sessions at Port and South Library.”

There will also be craft related activities following the reading of the novel.
