Council Endorses 2018/19 Rating Strategy

Published on Friday, 29 June 2018 at 4:47:34 PM

The 2018/19 Rating Strategy, endorsed by Council at last night’s Special Council Meeting, will see approximately 91% of residential ratepayers receiving a rates reduction.

Mayor Camilo Blanco said the rating strategy had been adjusted as a result of community consultation and compromise.

“I’d like to thank the community for providing their feedback on the proposed rating strategy during consultation sessions in May, as well as in written submissions.

“This endorsed strategy has reduced the rate in the dollar of 4 of the 8 rating categories and has reduced minimum payments from the initially proposed strategy, achieving some of the lowest rates in the dollar in the Pilbara.

“Striking the right balance for all ratepayers, improving service delivery and achieving long-term financial sustainability for the Town of Port Hedland are the key objectives of this strategy.

“The reality is that decreases in property valuations in recent years means the rate charged in the dollar has to increase to secure enough revenue for the Town’s operations.

“However, I’m pleased this strategy achieves greater rating uniformity and a more equitable distribution of the rates yield.

“The community has said they expect service delivery to continue at current levels into the future, which was made clear during the SCP consultation process.

“However, upgrades to roads, infrastructure and facilities can only happen if Council generates enough revenue to pay for it.
