UNI STUDENTS TO GET FIELD EXPERIENCE

03-Jul-2008
The Town of Port Hedland has teamed up with the Department of Sport and Recreation to offer a practicum placement program to two third-year Exercise and Health Science students from the University of Western Australia.

The placement will enable the students to gain practical work experience with the Town’s Recreation Team.  The program aims to raise the awareness of employment opportunities within the health and recreation industry and will ensure that the undergraduates are exposed to, and understand, the demands and needs of the Pilbara Region.

Both students will gain hands-on experience on the full range of everyday activities and projects undertaken by the Town’s Recreation Services.

Town of Port Hedland Mayor Stan Martin said that the initiative aims to demonstrate the unique needs and opportunities of the region.

“Bringing and retaining a qualified and skilled workforce in Town is a challenge faced by businesses and organisations throughout the Pilbara, including the Town of Port Hedland,” said Mayor Stan Martin.

“Among the thousands of university graduates who complete their studies every year, few choose to work in regional areas, sometimes simply because they have never done it before.”

“This work placement is a unique ‘try before you buy’ option - Council hopes that the students can learn about the importance of recreational, leisure and physical activities in Port Hedland, and get an appreciation of the challenges and opportunities that exist when working in the Pilbara.”

Current projects which are being progressed by Council’s Recreation Services include, the Master Plan for the redevelopment of McGregor Street and Colin Matheson Sporting Reserves, the construction of a Multi-Sports Complex in South Hedland, sports facility upgrades, implementation of a Town Cycle Plan, and overseeing everyday activities provided at the Town’s Aquatic Centres and the JD Hardie Centre.
