TEEN SOCCER SCORES SUPPORT AT THE JD
Town of Port Hedland JD Hardie Centre Supervisor Sarah Cunningham said the event is the first of its kind and was initiated by sixteen year-old Harris Remptan, to help meet the demand for additional soccer-based activities for young people in Town.
“The JD holds regular Senior Soccer competitions and also works with the Hedland Junior Soccer Association to run weekly junior soccer sessions. We have now been able to address the age gap in between and support the growing number of young people involved in the sport, thanks to Harris.”
Ms Cunningham added the inaugural event proved very popular with more than 50 young people backing up the continued growth of Indoor Soccer, also known as Futsal.
Harris Remptan said he noticed high levels of participation in the sport through coaching involvement at the Hedland Senior High School and organised the competition to also give the chance for young people who have not yet tried the sport to have a go.
“I am hoping that we’ll get even more young people involved next time. Soccer is a very exciting sport to participate in and I hope we can work together on making Teen Soccer a regular event.”
Town Chief Executive Officer Chris Adams said the success of the event is a great achievement for both Harris Remptan and the JD Hardie Centre.
“I congratulate both Harris and the JD Hardie Centre’s staff for being on the front foot in helping to grow the sport locally and address the needs of local young people by identifying and finding ways of accommodating the event.”
