REUSE WATER TANKS BENEFIT FROM COVERS

15-10-2009
Four new covers were installed on re-use water tanks located on school grounds in South Hedland.

The covers, worth $150,000, were purchased thanks to funds received from the State Government’s Regional Local Government Grants Scheme and were specifically designed to improve the safety and amenity of the tanks, assist with the release of odours,, and assist in minimising mosquito breeding in the tanks.

The covers were installed to the water re-use tanks situated at South Hedland High School, South Hedland Primary School, Baler Primary School and Cassia Primary School.

The water collected in the tanks originates from the Water corporation sewerage ponds and undergoes a treatment process, is chlorinated and irrigated onto the school ovals as part of the Town’s commitment to water re-use and recycling.

Town of Port Hedland Chief Executive Officer Chris Adams said the covers also aim to limit access to the tanks, improve local amenity and infrastructure and maximise the use of alternative irrigation water options.

“Port Hedland faces some unique requirements in terms of climatic conditions and mosquito management.  These new covers will play an essential role in assisting the Town in becoming smarter with water and allow Council’s Environmental Health Services to control mosquito breeding in the tanks more effectively,” Mr Adams said.

“It is pleasing to see the State Government getting behind these water efficiency and safety measures to boost reclaimed water use in Town.”
