MORE SPORTS FACILITY UPGRADES FOR HEDLAND
Mayor Kelly Howlett said that over the past three years the Town had using rate payers funds, income from external grants and contributions from BHP Billiton to progressively upgrade the quality of sports facilities within the Town. This has included a vast array of projects including clubrooms upgrades, fencing, electrical works, painting, car parking at various sites and the installation of shade.
The Mayor indicated that the most recent upgrade, the new baseball back net, had proven to be difficult to complete due to a range of project complexities including difficultly in meeting cyclone specifications, the original tender prices exceeding budget projections, contractors being unavailable and malicious damage occurring during construction.
Ms Howlett said that while there were some issues, the end result is fantastic with the Town now boasting what is probably one of the best baseball facilities outside of Perth. She added that the back net was complemented by other recent works at the site including a complete lighting upgrade and the installation of a new storage shed.
Ms Howlett stated that a number of sports related upgrades were currently happening including the redevelopment of the Colin Matheson Oval, upgrades at both of the Town’s pools, upgrading of the McGregor St oval surface, improvements to cricket nets and the construction of a new clubroom at Colin Matheson Oval. She also stated that design for the much awaited Multi-Purpose Recreation Centre was nearing completion and indicated that she anticipated that construction on this project would start early in the new year.
Mayor Howlett said providing quality sports facilities is clearly necessary for the Council to reach its vision of the Town becoming a Regional City where people want to live and are proud to call home.
