MINISTER’S VISIT PUTS HEDLAND’S INFRASTRUCTURE IN THE SPOTLIGHT

05-11-2009
The Minister for Regional Development Brendon Grylls paid a flying visit to the Town of Port Hedland to inspect a number of sites earmarked for major infrastructure development.

Minister Grylls focused on areas to be developed as part of the South Hedland Town Centre Revitalisation Plan, located around Throssell Road and Forrest Circle, with extensive works targeted towards the development of surrounding infrastructure of the South Hedland Shopping Centre area including a Main Street and medium density “mixed use” blocks.

Minister Grylls also received an update on progress works to build a proposed Marina along the Spoilbank area.  The Marina would ultimately cater for more than 140 pens for both recreational and commercial boats additional berthing areas will also be provided for other public boats, visiting ships, commercial vessels and other larger boats.

Town of Port Hedland Chief Executive Officer Chris Adams said the visit was an opportunity for Town of Port Hedland staff and Councillors to provide the Minister with their views and suggestions on major regeneration and infrastructure projects for the Town.

Mayor Kelly Howlett said, “All of the topics discussed with the Minister are vital for the long-term sustainability and vibrancy of the Town.”

“It is crucial that the Town gains support from the State Government to continue to meet the needs of the community and develop Port and South Hedland as a major regional centre.”

“Minister Grylls was very keen on suggestions to find a way forward and progress infrastructure developments for the Town.  It was a great opportunity to hear about the State Government’s ideas on the importance of providing the best possible services to the Hedland community, in the future,” Mayor Howlett said.

“We are looking forward to continuing to work closely with the State Government to make these ideas come to fruition.”
