GET READY FOR A SPLASH THIS SUMMER
Attendees will be the first to use the new Aqua Run and will also participate in a structured swimming program which will include water safety education, basic swimming skills, personal survival skills and rescue.
A healthy lunch will also be offered to participants aged 6 to 14 years.
Residents are reminded that children under 10 years must be accompanied by an adult. The event is sponsored by the Town of Port Hedland, Heds Up for a Healthy Active Hedland, the YMCA and the Department of Housing's South Hedland New Living Project.
The Aquatic Sessions will also showcase a series of upgrades, including substantial renovations and maintenance works started last year. $387,000 was spent on improvement works for the South Hedland and Gratwick Aquatic Centre, in the lead up to this year’s swimming season.
The South Hedland pool saw $60,000 worth of electrical upgrades completed, manual and auto cleaners purchased at a cost of $15,000, and $50,000 allocated to shading structures to be installed shortly. A further $86,000 was spent on acquiring new plant and equipment and carrying out essential work schedules and the purchase of an Aqua Run.
The Gratwick Aquatic Centre shared $176,000 of the funds, with similar upgrades completed (excluding the shade structures), together with a $40,000 pool blanket installed to bring a number of benefits to users, including increasing water temperature during winter, helping to keep too much heat from reaching the water during warmer months, and reducing evaporation.
The improvements were made possible thanks to funds received through the State Government’s Royalties for Region Scheme, the Town of Port Hedland and BHP Billiton Iron Ore Sustainability Partnership, and the Country Local Government Fund.
