COUNTDOWN ON FOR GREAT NORTHERN LITTER BLITZ

24-09-2009
The Town of Port Hedland is calling for community groups, local businesses and residents to sign up for the Great Northern Clean Up taking place in South Hedland on the 3rd of October.

Council has joined forces with Clean Up Australia, to launch this inaugural clean up event and raise awareness on the detrimental effects of litter dropped along kerbsides, footpaths and other public areas.

Town of Port Hedland Chief Executive Officer Chris Adams said the cleanup effort will concentrate on the South Hedland CBD and surroundings.

“We need all hands on deck to take part in the clean up event, and a few hours of people’s time on Saturday 3rd of October,” Mr Adams said.

“This clean up event provides a great opportunity for residents to participate in something that will not only impact on rubbish and waste but also raise awareness about how keeping the Town clean is a group effort.”

Mr Adams stressed that the success of the event relies on people’s participation to help make a difference to improve the environment and continue the litter prevention education campaign.

Individuals or teams registering for the Great Northern Clean Up event will meet at the Centenary Park, located near the South Hedland Shopping Centre at 10am on Saturday 3rd of October, collect bags and personal protective equipment and start their clean up at designated litter spots surrounding the South Hedland Town Centre until 11.30am.

Participants will be asked to leave bags filled with street litter on the kerbside, for collection by Council staff at the end of the event.   All participants are also invited to enjoy a free Barbecue to be held at Centenary Park from 12pm.

Event sponsors include the South Hedland Shopping Centre, McDonalds and the Town of Port Hedland.

To register and show support for the event and contact the Town’s Community Development Officer, Lora Bikic, by emailing cdo@porthedland.wa.gov.au or calling 9158 9388.
